A History of South Africa, by L Thompson.

Andrew Duminy

Abstract

Leonard Thompson is one of the great innovators in the field of South African History. In A History of South Africa he successfully reduces the vast specialist literature which has appeared during the past two decades to clear thematic threads. Readers who were brought up on the old school histories will be fascinated to learn from it how interpretations have altered and how modern historians now make so much more sense of the past than was previously the case. Readers who know nothing about South African history and who puzzle over the complexities of present-day politics will find it a very useful aid. It is far more readable than any of the other available modern histories.
